Former UNC men’s basketball head coach and longtime assistant Bill Guthridge will be inducted on May 2 to the A STEP UP Assistant Coaches’ Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2020.
The Class of 2020 was announced last year in March, but had ceremonies delayed due to the pandemic. This year’s class will be recognized at a “virtual” ceremony on May 2 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Guthridge was an assistant under head coach Dean Smith for 30 seasons at UNC, before taking over the head coaching job for three seasons upon Smith’s retirement.
During his 33 years in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels won two NCAA titles, 13 ACC tournament titles and made it to a whopping 12 Final Fours.
He joins a Hall of Fame class which includes: Bill Brock (Baylor), Al Brown (Duke), Karl Hobbs (Rutgers), Jolette Law (South Carolina), Tommy Lloyd (Arizona), Kenny Payne (New York Knicks) and Bob Starkey (Auburn).
