Bill Guthridge–the former UNC men’s basketball head coach and longtime assistant to Dean Smith–will be posthumously inducted into the A STEP UP Assistant Coaches Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2020.

The news was announced Tuesday morning, with Guthridge set to be officially inducted on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 as part of a ceremony held at the uptown Sheraton Hotel in Charlotte.

Guthridge will go in alongside a class that includes: Bill Brock, Al Brown, Karl Hobbs, Jolette Law, Tommy Lloyd, Kenny Payne and Bob Starkey. Current UNC assistant coach Steve Robinson was part of the inaugural Class of 2019.

After spending five years as an assistant to Tex Winter at Kansas State, Guthridge joined Dean Smith’s staff at UNC back in 1967–where he then served on Smith’s staff for 30 years.

During those 30 years alongside Smith, the Tar Heels won national championships in 1982 and 1993 while also winning 12 ACC Championships and playing in 10 Final Fours.

Following Smith’s retirement, Guthridge led UNC to the Final Four as the head coach in both 1998 and 2000.

Guthridge was also an assistant for Smith on the United States National Team in 1976, helping lead the American squad to a gold medal in Montreal.

He was previously inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2013, two years before his death in 2015.
