A bridge in a Chapel Hill neighborhood has reopened to passenger vehicles after safety concerns caused its closure last month.

Perry Creek Drive between Pebble Springs Road and 201 Perry Creek Drive was scheduled to reopen to passenger vehicles in Thursday. The road was closed for more than two weeks after a third party contractor found “the structural integrity of a large drainage culvert where Perry Creek Drive crosses a creek to be compromised,” according to the release.

“We appreciate the patience of our community during this closure,” Emergency Management coordinator Vencelin Harris said in a release. “We know detours can be a pain and take valuable time out of your commute. Please know your safety was at the heart of this decision.”

After initially saying the closure could last for us to six months, town staff and engineers determined based on additional findings that the roadway could sustain a weight limit of 10-tons per vehicle, according to a release from the town.

Construction to repair the culvert is scheduled for late August and could last for up to a month. The section of roadway will be closed entirely during that time.
