The fourth-ranked UNC men’s soccer team kicked off its season on the right note this past weekend, sweeping a pair of games against in dominant fashion.

Playing at Elon’s Rudd Field on Friday, the Tar Heels upstaged No. 12 Providence in a top-25 showdown–putting together a convincing 4-2 victory.

Freshman John Nelson scored a goal on his first career shot to open up scoring against the Friars, while Cam Lindley, Jelani Peters and David October each added a goal themselves.

Peters and October scored in the second half, to help the Tar Heels break what had been a 2-2 tie at halftime.

A similar fate met Rutgers in Cary on Sunday, as UNC continued to score the ball with great success–rolling to a 6-1 victory over the Scarlet Knights.

For the second straight game, Peters made a loud impact.

The native of Oswego, Illinois scored two goals and added an assist against Rutgers to help lead the Tar Heels yet again.

Andy Lopez, Jeremy Kelly and Alex Rose each scored their first goals of the season, while October netted his second goal of the year on a first-half penalty kick.

UNC ultimately scored three goals in each half, which left the outcome of the match from ever being in doubt.

The Tar Heels will look to continue their hot start in Wilmington on Friday with a match against UNCW, which is set to begin at 7 p.m.
