The University of North Carolina women’s basketball team improved to 6-4 after a 68-59 win over Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon in Carmichael Arena. Sylvia Hatchell is only five wins shy of 700 victories with North Carolina in her 30 years coaching UNC.

The game featured three players with double digits. Jamie Cherry, a sophomore guard, seemed to be back to her usual self, and led the team with 20 points. Freshman Destinee Walker added 17 points and red-shirt junior Hillary Summers contributed 13 points in addition to nine rebounds. Freshman Stephanie Watts scored nine points and had 12 rebounds.

The game featured no ties, as the the Mountaineers put themselves in an early hole they were never able to overcome. With about four minutes left in the first quarter UNC was up 10-1, with App State 0-7 from the field. It took the Mountaineers over five minutes to add onto their early free-throw.

Entering half time, UNC had gained a 26-18 lead. The Mountaineers came within three points midway through the third quarter, at 28-25, after a 7-0 run. Despite the surge, App State lost momentum and the fourth quarter began with a Cherry three-pointer, putting the Tar Heels up 53-41.

The persistent Mountaineers came within four points roughly halfway through the fourth quarter. However, the Tar Heels pulled away and secured the win.

Despite the mostly team effort for the women in blue, usual key player, senior guard N’Dea Bryant fouled out with 1:34 remaining in the third quarter. Bryant had four points throughout the game.

UNC will be playing three games within the week. The Tar Heels are next traveling out of state for a Monday, Dec.14 matchup at eight o’clock against Oklahoma State.
