It was a rough weekend at Fetzer Field for UNC lacrosse as both the highly-ranked men’s and women’s squads were handed the first losses of the season.

Hofstra led nearly the entire game against the fifth-ranked UNC men’s lacrosse team on Saturday in Chapel Hill.

Sam Llinares and Josh Byrne combined for nine of the Pride’s 10 goals in the 10-5 victory over North Carolina.

The loss was UNC’s first on the season, after starting with victories over Michigan and Furman, and the first loss Hofstra in the teams’ last five meetings.

Hoftra grabbed a 2-1 lead at the 7:15 mark of the first period, and the Pride never looked back.

UNC will be back in action against Johns Hopkins at noon on Sunday when the Tar Heels travel to Baltimore for the first road game of the season.

Meanwhile, the second-ranked Carolina women’s lacrosse team lost to eighth-ranked Florida on Sunday by a 16-15 score.

The Gators scored four consecutive goals in a 10-minute span in the second half to remain undefeated on the season.

Carolina fell to 3-1 with the loss.

Marie McCool led the Tar Heel offense by setting a career-high in goals scored for the second consecutive game with five, but it was not enough for UNC.

Sydney Pirreca matched McCool with five goals to lead Florida. Mollie Stevens added three for the Gators and Nicole Graziano scored twice and had two assists.

Carolina led 5-1 during the first half and was up 11-10 with 22:43 to play. The Gators then scored the next four goals and never relinquished the lead.

UNC has another tough test coming up hosting No. 1 Maryland at one o’clock Saturday afternoon.
