Fans in attendance Thursday at Louisville Slugger Stadium for the ACC Baseball Tournament were treated to a rare sighting in the opening game of the afternoon.

For the first time in four meetings this season, Boston College held No. 2 UNC below 15 runs.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Tar Heels triggered the event’s mercy rule on the way to a commanding 10-0 victory in just seven innings.

For UNC (45-11), the win means Friday’s game against NC State–which also defeated Boston College in its tournament opener–is for a spot in the championship semifinals over the weekend.

Junior shortstop Logan Warmoth (4-for-5) and centerfielder Brian Miller (3-for-4, 1 RBI) combined for half of the Tar Heels’ 14 hits in the game.

As far as the run producing goes, UNC was led by Kyle Datres, Zack Gahagan and ACC Freshman of the Year Ashton McGee–who each tallied a pair of RBIs against the helpless Boston College pitching staff.

The Eagles (25-28) managed just two hits as a team against five different Tar Heel arms.

Freshman Tyler Baum earned the win after tossing the first three innings, but head coach Mike Fox went with a cautious approach since there’s a chance the team could play four games in four days.

Taylor Sugg, Austin Bergner, Bo Weiss and Rodney Hutchison each threw one inning apiece–producing extremely similar results in the process.

With more tournament games scheduled to be played later in the day, the Tar Heels were granted the victory two innings early by virtue of their 10-run lead.
