The site where Villanova’s Kris Jenkins hit the shot that still torments Tar Heel fans to this day–Houston, Texas–was the source of yet another Final Four heartbreak for UNC on Friday night.

After battling Stanford to a scoreless draw throughout regulation and overtime in the men’s soccer NCAA Semifinals, UNC came up just short in a classic penalty shootout that saw the defending national champions prevail 10-9.

Tucker Hume and Alan Winn each had prime opportunities to score for UNC before the match reached penalty kicks, but each man was denied by the legs of Stanford goalie Andrew Epstein.

Once the game reached its final stage, however, everything seemed to find the back of the net.

Not until Amir Bashti gave the Cardinal their 10th straight penalty conversion did UNC defender Alex Comsia send his try sailing over the crossbar–and with it, the Tar Heels’ dream of winning their first national title since 2011.

UNC will end the season with 14 shutouts and an NCAA-low 10 goals allowed all season. This fact alone makes it that much tougher for the team to swallow, considering it didn’t surrender a single goal in the normal run of play.

The cruel reality of penalty kicks was enough to send the Tar Heels (14-3-4) packing, while Stanford (15-3-4) will go on to play Wake Forest for a shot at defending its crown.
