Following a shocking upset loss to Davidson on Friday, the second-ranked UNC baseball team entered Saturday’s showdown with Michigan one loss away from having a fantastic season washed down the drain.

Fortunately, for the Tar Heels–they have Gianluca Dalatri and the Wolverines didn’t.

The freshman right-hander allowed just a single run over seven innings, as UNC cruised past Michigan for an 8-1 victory at Boshamer Stadium.

Dalatri’s only mishap came in the top of the second inning when the Wolverines (42-17) took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run from Drew Lugbauer.

From there, the New Jersey native settled into a rhythm–allowing just five hits during his stint on the mound.

It took the UNC offense a little bit longer to get going, but the Tar Heels (48-13) put together all eight of their runs during the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Ashton McGee’s two-run single in the fifth handed the team its first lead of the tournament, while Cody Roberts capped the scoring with a two-run double in the seventh.

The Tar Heels also received three hits and an RBI from senior outfielder Tyler Lynn.

Once UNC had firmly taken control, head coach Mike Fox let Dalatri leave the mound in favor of relievers Brett Daniels and Jason Morgan–who each threw a scoreless frame to close out the win.
