North Carolina Department of Transportation officials will be in Carrboro on Monday for an open-house looking for feedback on street-improvement ideas for the intersection of Greensboro Street and Estes Drive Extension.

The project is to make the intersection safer and more effective in handling existing and future traffic, according to officials.

Carrboro Mayor Lydia Lavelle said DOT officials are interested in getting feedback from the community as they work for a solution moving forward.

“They’re going to present several proposals, and they really want to hear from the public,” Lavelle said.

Lavelle added that she had not seen the plans, “but my understanding is that one of the proposals might include a roundabout.”

The plans would also be incorporating plans for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, according to Lavelle.

“The feedback that they get, they’ll report it to the Board of Alderman,” Lavelle said of the next steps. “And then we’ll consider the feedback, and we’ll make a recommendation to them as to how the board thinks.”

Lavelle said she did not know a timeline of when the project would be underway, but she said it was her understanding the state would like to decide on a plan “sometime soon.”

“Improvements of some sort are coming there,” Lavelle said. “The degree of what they will end up being I think will be determined over the course of the next couple of weeks.”

The floating meeting is scheduled for four o’clock until seven o’clock Monday night at Carrboro Town Hall.
