The Chapel Hill Town Council will review a concept plan for the proposed Wegmans Food Market location on Monday night.

The Chapel Hill Town Council unanimously approved a $4 million incentives package last month to bring Wegmans Supermarket to Chapel Hill. The Orange County Commissioners would give Wegmans $4 million over five years. Chapel Hill would reimburse the county for half of that incentive. On Monday night, Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger said the council will review Wegmans’ concept plan.

“Concepts plans are what’s being proposed on a specific site,” Hemminger said. “It’s just the basics. It’s not the grand details. It’s, ‘This is what we would like to put at this site.’

Concept plans typically go before the Community Design Commission before being presented to the Town Council. The CDC can give feedback that can then be used to make adjustments before being presented to the full council.

Wegmans has submitted a plan for land on 15-501, currently the location of Performance Auto Mall. Performance is slated to move to a location near Southpoint Mall in Durham next summer.

Hemminger said this is the “30,000 foot view” that will allow the applicant to get feedback before going forward with a formal application.

The grocery store is slated for 130,000 square feet and 770 parking spaces.

Hemminger has previously said that has the potential to be the largest sales tax generator in all of Orange County.
