The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said it helped recover a human body from Jordan Lake on Tuesday afternoon and launched an investigation as a result.

A release from the office at 4:35 p.m. said the body was found near the Farrington Point Boat Ramp at 605 Farrington Point Road. No information about who discovered the body and at what time was provided in the initial release.

The sheriff’s office said it is “in the preliminary stages of an investigation currently,” and urged anyone who has “observed suspicious activity in the area of Farrington Road or Jordan Lake” to call its investigators at 919-542-2911 to share their information.

Chatham County investigators did not indicate in their Tuesday release what the cause of death was for the most recent recovered body — but Jordan Lake has experienced two drownings so far in 2023. In March, a 15-year-old Carrboro High School student drowned while jet-skiing, which was also near the Farrington Point Boat Ramp. Earlier in August, a 73-year-old Texas resident died after swimming near the Poe’s Ridge Boat Ramp and not surfacing to rejoin his accompanying friends.
