This Wednesday night, you could become America’s newest billionaire.

The Powerball Jackpot is now estimated at 1.4 billion dollars with a cash value of 868 million.

John Bandi who works at the Family Fare convenience store on Weaver Dairy Road said lots of new customers are coming in to buy tickets.

“There are so many people buying tickets for the very first time and they have many questions,” said Bandi.

The Powerball Jackpot reached over 1 billion dollars after Saturday’s drawing when no one had the winning ticket.

Bandi said they opened a second register this week just to sell lottery tickets.

“It’s more than usual because of the high lottery amount. Everybody is interested to try their luck and very much enthusiastic and anxious to see what’s going to happen.”

But try not to get your hopes up. The chances of winning are 1 in 292,000,000.

“I always said it was a tax on people who are bad at math,” said Virginia Waterman. She said she hadn’t purchased a lottery ticket in probably 30 years but had to play this time.

“It’s just like why not? There is always a chance that you might win,” said Waterman.

Odds of winning are actually lower than previous jackpots. In October Powerball added 10 more numbers to choose from, creating even more combinations and less chances of winning.

It’s fun the think about the question, what would you do if you won the lottery? Many people would say extravagant vacations, new sports cars or a massive mansion, but Waterman was more practical.

“Pay off my student loans if it goes that far,” said Waterman.

The Powerball drawing will take place on Wednesday night.
