A teenager died while swimming in Jordan Lake on Monday, according to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

In a release Monday evening, the office said deputies responded to a call from the Moncure area at 3:33 p.m. about a possible drowning. A witness reported a young man in his late teens was swimming in the lake near the area of Clark Poe Road when they saw the victim struggling to stay above the waterline.

Multiple rescue units rushed out to Jordan Lake, which is mostly located in Chatham County, to assist in search and rescue. The body of the victim was recovered at 6:35 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

The release said no further information about the victim will be shared at the time as the family is first notified. The office said no other known victims were missing at the time of the search.

“Our deepest sympathy is with the family and friends of the victim at this time of unexpected and tragic loss,” the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said in the release. “We are grateful for the outpouring of support offered by our public safety partners in this search and rescue effort.”
