CARRBORO – Property management at Collins Crossing (formerly Abbey Court) will vote on a repair assessment that has the owners of the apartment complex searching for an answer.

The $5,000 assessment comes after the complex was sold to Aspen Square Management of Massachusetts and required major upgrades to outside stairwells and minor repairs inside the buildings. The assessment would be an all-at-once fee.

emPOWERment manages 33 units and owns three units—including one at Collins Crossing—and is one of the area companies that provides to low income families in Orange County. As these companies are non-profits and don’t have major cash flow, a $5,000 one-time assessment fee could cause major financial problems.

Management has since been discussing lowering the fee to $3,548 and accepting monthly installments. That decision will be made tonight when the management entity will vote on the new assessment.
