UNC Police are investigating an overnight robbery that put the Chapel Hill campus on high alert for more than an hour.

Emergency sirens went off and an Alert Carolina message was posted just before one o’clock Friday morning warning of an armed and dangerous person on or near campus.

An updated message from the university reported the sirens were activated after an armed robbery occurring near Ehringhaus Residence Hall around 12:40 Friday morning.

The message says a male with a handgun robbed a UNC student just outside of the residence hall. The victim described the suspect as a 20-25 year old black male, estimated to be 5’ 10” tall. The victim told authorities the suspect had a goatee and wore a ski mask covering part of his face. The suspect was reportedly wearing a Dallas Cowboys jacket and sweat pants. Officials say he fled on foot from the site of the incident in the direction of Ridge Road.

An ‘All Clear’ message was sent to the campus just after two o’clock in the morning.
