Today is Wednesday, January 13, 2016. The biggest Powerball Jackpot in history gets selected tonight, but your lottery odds could be worse. It’s Big Block of Cheese Day. We also meet the world’s sneakiest animals.
Lottery Odds
You probably aren’t going to win. Lottery odds, at least for the Powerball Jackpot, are 1 in 292 million. You’re more likely to get hit by lightning, flip a coin heads 28 times in a row, date a supermodel or be bitten by a shark.
But, lottery odds could be worse.
Here are five things that are less likely than winning the lottery.
An asteroid destroying your home: About 1 in 3.4 trillion.
Filling out a perfect March Madness bracket: 1 in 2.4 trillion.
Shuffling cards in order: 1 in 1-to-the-power-of-68. (Which is to say, 1 with 68 zeroes behind it.)
Having sextuplets: 1 in 4.7 billion (if you don’t do fertility treatments).
Your existence: 1 in 10-to-the-power-of-2,685,000 (10 with 2,685,000 zeroes behind it).
Let’s explain that last one. A blog post on Harvard University’s website explains, taking into account your parents meeting and having kids together; the exact sperm meeting the exact egg; and then that happening for their parents, and their parents and so on back to the beginning of human history about 3 million years ago.
Big Block of Cheese Today
The White House is inviting Cabinet officials, members of Congress, Senior White House officials and special guests for a day-long engagement event on social media – inspired by President Andrew Jackson’s 1837 open house featuring a 1,400-pound block of cheese. Find out how you can participate here. If you’re a fan of West Wing, you might understand this idea more than most. Here’s a video to help you out.
World’s Sneakiest Animals
The animals are featured on a BBC show. In the clip below, we see monkeys stealing from tourists.
