What’s your latest take on the college football season?

This is the week that was supposed to be building toward the annual spring game, which Mack Brown has made more exciting along with everything else about Carolina football. The official scrimmage to end spring practice was set for this Saturday in Kenan Stadium.

If it were still on, Ron Stutts would likely be talking to Brown today on a special edition of Mondays with Mack. With spring practice postponed and eventually canceled, it left one of many voids in Chapel Hill and across the state. And as April drones on, questions remain.

Top of the list is will there be any college football played in 2020? Varied are the opinions of many coaches, administrators and media floating around. Coaches range from bold to non-committal.

Clemson’s Dabo Swinney says he has zero doubt that football will be played this fall. What else would you expect from Dabo, the eternal optimist who has some words for just about everything? Swinney’s faith is basically based on his religious faith and his faith in so many smart people suddenly finding a vaccine and systems.

Mack Brown, as usual, takes the smart road. He may have his opinions, but right now he says he is preparing for all options, starting with full training camp, hopefully having a week or two added on to it because his Tar Heels never held a single spring practice.

The NCAA, obviously, should attach as many days to the front end as were missed in the spring. But that depends if there will be a full season of games played as scheduled. That could be adjusted depending on what state and federal governments rule, or wiped out altogether. And the latter option is picking up steam, unfortunately.

A common question I am hearing and reading if it’s not safe enough to have fans attending, how can the teams compete? To do that, how can you give thousands of tests to players during the season if millions of citizens need them? And if stadiums are closed, how can campuses be opened and student-athletes involved in sanctioned competitive activities?

So much to consider and ponder.
