Two reasons why nobody’s crying for Carolina.

‘The Tar Heels need one more win to have more for the season than the 2002 team that finished 8-20. The year was a blip in the middle of Matt Doherty’s up-and-down three seasons.

Some Dukie tweeted the other day that Carolina still hasn’t won in this decade, referring to the five-game losing streak that began after the December, 30, 2019, win over Yale. That skid will end soon, hopefully Saturday against Miami.

You wouldn’t expect Duke to gloat, since Coach K is the only one with a head-to-head winning record against Roy Williams. You would expect it more from those opponents the Heels have controlled over the years, the lower division of the ABC Club. So that’s one reason why no tears are being shed.

The other is because UNC has the most players named to the 2020 McDonald’s All-American team, announced this week. Carolina has four and is ranked in the top three recruiting classes with Duke and Kentucky, who have a total five of the latest Big Macs.

Thanks to recruits who went elsewhere and others who came but didn’t pan out, the high school class of 2020 is by far the highest-rated Williams has signed since Harrison Barnes, Reggie Bullock and Kendall Marshall, the class of 2011.

From bottom to top, rated by the various recruiting services, Carolina’s crop starts with RJ Davis, a 6-1 point guard from White Plains, New York, the No. 39 kid in the class. Then comes Caleb Love, a taller point guard at 6-3 from St. Louis and the 17th-rated recruit.

Both will get a chance, along with Jeremiah Francis, to win the starting position if Cole Anthony turns pro, as expected.

The next two players are really big and really good, according to all scouting reports. Walker Kessler, a 6-11 highly skilled big man from outside Atlanta, is the No. 14-rated kid in the class. Then comes the No. 11 player, 6-9 Day’Ron Sharpe from Winterville, North Carolina. They will also contend to start.

So, don’t cry for Carolina. Reinforcements are on the way.
