Third baseman Eric Jones hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning Wednesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium, a hit that provided the difference in a 1-0 upset victory for the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs over the UNC baseball team.

It was just the second victory over UNC in Gardner-Webb’s program history, as the Tar Heels (9-8) also had their five-game home winning streak snapped.

Four Tar Heel pitchers combined to hold the Bulldogs (11-7) to just three hits in the game, but Jones’ solo shot ended up being more than enough to get the job done.

UNC was limited to just five hits–and shut out for the first time this season–the day after junior Rodney Hutchison tossed a complete game shutout in the team’s 1-0 win over North Carolina A&T.

Cody Roberts and Zack Gahagan each went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Clemente Inclan added the other hit for the Tar Heels.

Up Next:

A weekend series against Pittsburgh–the team’s first ACC series at home this season–is next on the docket, with the Panthers set to play the Tar Heels three times from Friday through Sunday.
