The start of May means the beginning of National Bike Month across the country.

Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and to encourage others to ride bikes as well. National Bike Month has something for everyone, from hardcore cyclists to those who enjoy a casual ride on the weekends.

The Town of Carrboro is celebrating National Bike Month with several cycling events around the local area.

On May 10, residents are invited to ride with Mayor Lydia Lavelle and other Town officials around a three-mile course (supervised by police, of course) with coffee and refreshments served afterwards.

May 15 marks Carrboro’s Famous Bike-To-Work Breakfast, where residents can pick up coffee and food at the Libba Cotten Bikeway as they cycle to work.

May 14 – 18 is National Bike to Work Week across the country, so expect to see many residents from Carrboro, Chapel Hill and other cities taking to the roadways to celebrate.

Carrboro Alderman Damon Seils is getting into the spirit of #BikeMonth by featuring a new bike-themed song every day of the month.

The town was recognized in 2010 as a “Silver” level bicycle-friendly community League of American Bicyclists in 2010 after the Board of Aldermen adopted the “Comprehensive Bicycle Transportation Plan.

“Carrboro will be a place that is bicycle-friendly; where people have an accessible, safe, and convenient option of bicycling for transportation, recreation, and health,” reads the vision of the plan.

“Where bicycle lanes and greenways provide a connected system within and outside the Town; where future development provides access and facilities for bicyclists; where bicycle transportation is the easy choice; and where proposed policies and programs educate, inspire, and encourage residents and enforce safe bicyclist and motorist behavior.”
