Jack the Songman (Jack Carmichael) stopped by Live & Local this week, ahead of the release of his second full-length album, “Faces, Places, and Warm Embraces.”

“These are songs that I wrote in the past five years,” Carmichael says of the new album. “I had all these songs (that were) little mini-portraits or caricatures of a beloved person or place in my life, and they fit together nicely, (and) eventually I realized I should try to (write) in that direction…

“My last album was a little more introspective, (with) a lot of love songs, a lot of songs about one person. This album is more third-person, if that makes sense – but also, in that way, I feel like it’s even more autobiographical. I’m painting the picture of what my twenties look like. It feels like a reflection on this past decade and the people that I’ve been lucky enough to be surrounded by.”

Recorded in Winston-Salem by Carmichael’s friend Cole Covington, “Faces, Places” is due out on Friday, August 7 – and Jack the Songman is celebrating that evening with an album-release show at Cat’s Cradle Back Room, starting at 8 p.m. with Laura Ivy and Pint Night opening.

Friday’s show might be your last chance to see Jack the Songman live on stage for a while: he says he’s planning to take a break from music, albeit for a very good reason.

“My wife and I are expecting a baby,” he says. “(But) I’ll be back one day.”

Jack the Songman stopped by Live & Local this week (accompanied by drummer Eddie Burgard) to discuss the album and Friday’s show. He also played two songs live in the 97.9 The Hill studio: “Baby Sweetie Honey Cutie” and “Anna’s Party.” Listen:
