For over forty years, Mae McLendon has worked within the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area, serving on numerous public service and volunteer committees.  Mae has proudly served twelve years on the Chapel Hill Planning Board and has been a valued and respected member of the Lions Club Precinct, an organization that strives to expand voter participation through voter registration and education. Mae is also an active member of the Northside Conservation Task Force, a committee that oversees community sustainability, development and conservation of historical property within Chapel Hill-Carrboro.

Mrs. Mclendon is a “living dynamo, she just doesn’t stop.” If you ask her about her years of service, she would say, “I am proud that I have been able to use my talents and abilities to assist others who are in need especially our youth, the homeless, those who are hungry and in prisons.” Mae Mclendon has succeeded in doing so, and continues to increase her efforts with every passing day.

Mclendon also relishes in giving her time to the Inter-Faith Council for Social Services, Chapel Hill-Carrboro Crop Hunger Walk, the NAACP; and the NC Inmate Grievance Resolution Board, a position appointed by the governor. Mrs. McLendon is also an active member of St. Paul AME Church, and in March of last year she received the Outstanding Contributor to Volunteerism from the Association of Justice Volunteerism. Mrs. McLendon is also a recipient of the Irene Briggaman Lifetime Achievement Award, an award presented to remarkable individuals who have demonstrated a lifetime of exceptional public service.

Mae Mclendon’s unwavering commitment to helping those in need is what makes us so proud and honored to call her a Hometown Hero.
