This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint Auto Mall, is Crystal Dreisbach.
Crystal is a member of Don’t Waste Durham, a group that creates solutions that prevent trash at its source.
Don’t Waste Durham works towards its mission by implementing prevention programs that eliminate single-use disposables, advocating for evidence-based policy change around waste reduction, and raising awareness about waste reduction and encouraging reusable, compostable, and recyclable alternatives.
“We’ve been working diligently on all kinds of ways to reduce single use plastics in the community,” Dreisbach said. “There is a precedent across the United States for this voluntary ban idea to be turned into local policy and although it’s not mandatory or enforceable, it does a few things.
“It sends a strong message to the community. It makes a statement. As a local government, we the city council for example, wish to reduce these single use plastic pollutants in our community. We ask residents and businesses to stand with us for the good and betterment of the town we live in.”
