This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Carol Fitch Walker from Fitch Lumber & Hardware.

Carol’s grandfather — A.B. Fitch — founded the original Fitch Lumber in Mebane in 1907. The business eventually moved down south to Carrboro in the mid 1900’s.

Carol and her brother Mac worked at the store while growing up and now continue to do so as three of Mac’s sons work at the company.

“She’s been not only a second mom to me,” said David Fitch, “but she’s been a second mom to so many other people in this community. She’s been a long time summer school teacher and also the leader of a Methodist youth fellowship at University United Methodist Church downtown for 20+ years when I was a kid growing up. Clearly to all my friends and most people in the community knew her and knew how great she was.”
