Holiday Highlight Safety Tip #5

While it’s still a few days before Christmas, Triangle Electrical Services wants to be sure you’re ready to safely dispose of your Christmas Tree when it’s time to take it down.

There’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh pine throughout your home for the holidays. It’s much more fun to put up the Christmas tree than it is to take it down, but the longer your tree stays in your home, the greater a fire hazard it becomes. It’s best to discard trees within one month after purchase.

While it may be tempting to quickly vacuum the fallen needles after you carry the tree outside, it is recommended that you sweep them up instead. This is the only way to avoid potential sparks from heat and possible damage to your vacuum cleaner!

Most importantly, never burn Christmas tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood stove. Firs and pines contain a lot of sap, and the needles burn very quickly. Flames can flare up out of control and send sparks flying across a room in a matter of seconds.

Holiday Highlights Recipe #5 – Southern Toffee Bread Pudding with Caramel Sauce

This dessert embraces two beloved southern ingredients, biscuits and pecans, and features our family’s Chapel Hill Toffee. It comes together quickly and bakes like a traditional casserole.  I use a combination of biscuits and brioche bread as I like the combination of textures. If you’ve only got one or the other on hand, feel free to use what you’ve got!

Ali's Crush-Worthy Gift Guide

As the member of the WCHL staff who does the most shopping (this is a self-appointed title) I know it can be difficult to find the perfect gift. In 2020 especially, we’re going to be sending gifts to friends and family that we might have given them in person in years past, so it’s important that our loved ones know that their gifts were picked with care. As the host of Woman Crush Wednesday, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many amazing small business owners, crafters, and creators. That combined with my trusted “one-for-them, one-for-me” holiday shopping method hopefully means you’ll find some solid local gift options.

Hidden Forest Naturals

At this point, if you’re still looking for a Christmas gift, you might need something that can be instantly delivered, like a gift card from a local business. Hidden Forest Naturals is one of my favorite places in Carrboro. Located in Carr Mill Mall, this whimsical, zero-waste shop is full of natural beauty and skin care products. You can purchase a digital gift card on their website and have it delivered directly to your loved one. If you want to mask-up and check out their shop, I recommend their Healing Crystal Bath Bombs. It’s such a unique gift, and chances are you know someone who needs a relaxing soak using something with the word “healing” in it.

Chapel Hill Restaurant Group

When I was 15 years old, I had my very first job at Squids, and I can tell you – the people who work there are as amazing as the hush puppies. One of the absolute coolest perks of my time there was arranging pick-ups with Dean Smith, who picked up his weekly order behind the restaurant. For someone who lives around here, a Chapel Hill Restaurant Group gift card is a really thoughtful gift. It’s also a great way to support a local business and give a gift to that friend who might not be ready to enjoy dinner out just yet. I’ll even help you out – the first two people who email ali@wchl.com will win a free gift certificate to Chapel Hill restaurant group!

Night Gallery Branching Out

Night Gallery Branching Out is full of carefully curated gifts that range from lingerie to sports memorabilia.  They recently moved their shop from inside University Place, to a storefront outside the mall, a hop, skip and a jump from us! If you’re not sure what type of gift you want to give someone, pick up a Night Gallery Branching Out gift card instead. You will be giving them a one-of-a-kind shopping experience at one of the original shops at University Place.

Shrunken Head Boutique

Every true-blue Carolina fan has owned a customized t-shirt from Shrunken Head Boutique. If you have no idea what to get someone, but you know they’re a Carolina fan (because who else would you be friends with?) check out Shrunken Head’s website to shop for every UNC gift you can imagine. When I was a kid and my parents would take me to walk on Franklin Street, I always wanted to go in Shrunken Head. Even as an adult I find myself going in there just to take in the Chapel Hill history that lives there.

Holiday Cocktail Recipes from Carrie Brogren

“Jolly Gingerbread”

4 Ounces Milk

4 Ounces Vanilla Vodka

4 Ounces Kahlua

4 Ounces Ginger Beer

1/8 Teaspoon Ground Ginger

Cinnamon, Ground Ginger, Whipped Cream, Ginger Snaps (for garnish)

For the cocktail:

Combine 1/8 Teaspoon of Cinnamon and 1/8 Teaspoon of Sugar, wet the rim of your glass, and rim with Cinnamon/Sugar mixture.

Add a handful of ice, Milk, Vanilla Vodka, Kahlua, and Ground Ginger to a cocktail shaker. Shake gently and pour into a glass. Top with Ginger beer. Garnish with Whipped Cream. Crush a handful of Ginger Snap Cookies and sprinkle cookie crumbs on top of  Whipped Cream.

* For a little something extra special, you can add a hint of smoked Cinnamon to this cocktail.  Prior to rimming your glass with Cinnamon/sugar, you can light the end of a Cinnamon Stick on fire and then carefully blow out the flame. Quickly put the smoking Cinnamon Stick under your glass and turn the glass upside down on a plate. This traps the smoke, which swirls around the glass and adds a touch of flavor and aroma to the interior of your glass. Then, carefully rim your glass and follow cocktail instructions.
