Holiday Highlight Safety Tip #3

Traveling can be one of the most stressful parts of the holiday season, especially with the extra precautions that are necessary to travel this year. Triangle Electrical Services is here for this Holiday Highlight with a few tips to keep your home safe!

If you’re spending the holidays away from home, light timers may be a good investment. Some homeowners leave a few lights on when they go on vacation, but unfortunately this wastes energy and doesn’t actually deter intruders. Installing light timers in your home is more effective way to prevent break-ins, and it’s easier on your electric bill. Staying home for the holidays? Light timers are still a good choice for your Christmas tree or other potentially flammable decorations. No more worrying about falling asleep on the couch and leaving the lights on all night!

Holiday Highlights is presented by Triangle Electrical Services: keeping your holidays merry & bright – and safe – since 1995!

Holiday Highlights Recipe #3: Honey Roasted Parsnips and Brussels Sprouts

It’s root vegetable season! Roasted veggies are a classic, simple side dish, but parsnips are often overlooked. Here I’ve brought together bright ivory parsnips with green and purple brussels sprouts for a colorful combo to dress up your holiday table!

Ali's Crush-Worthy Gift Guide, Volume 3

As the member of the WCHL staff who does the most shopping (this is a self-appointed title) I know it can be difficult to find the perfect gift. In 2020 especially, we’re going to be sending gifts to friends and family that we might have given them in person in years past, so it’s important that our loved ones know that their gifts were picked with care. As the host of Woman Crush Wednesday, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many amazing small business owners, crafters, and creators. That combined with my trusted “one-for-them, one-for-me” holiday shopping method hopefully means you’ll find some solid local gift options.

Glee Kids

If you have little ones on your holiday list, (or big kids who never grew up) you can find something for everyone at Glee Kids right here in University Place. Whether you’re looking for that “main event” gift or a stocking stuffer, Glee Kids has the gifts you’re looking for and the gifts you didn’t know you needed. I’m partial to this Unicorn Snot lip gloss. I think it will be a big hit with my niece because kids especially like things that adults find a little bit gross. Moms and Dads will love it too because it’s cruelty free and vegan, making it safe for little faces.

All She Wrote Notes

All She Wrote Notes is a little slice of happiness right down the road in Burlington. Maghon Taylor, the creator and artist, is genuinely wonderful and brings joy to everyone around her. There are several amazing gift ideas on her website (I’m personally eyeing the “Mrs. Claws” White Claw koozies) but the one I find the most interesting is the instructional calligraphy book “Happy Hand Lettering.” Trace your way through the book and wow everyone on your holiday card list next year with professional looking addresses. I own my own copy of “Happy Hand Lettering” and it’s has been such a wonderful quarantine activity. A fun secret about this gift idea – Maghon will personalize it for you in her beautiful handwriting!

Salon Trip

I don’t know a single person that doesn’t enjoy a good mani/pedi. Well, I have this one friend who is a marathon runner and doesn’t like pedicures – but she runs 26 miles for fun, so I take her advice with a grain of salt. I think a gift certificate for spa treatment is such a thoughtful gift. If you don’t know where your gift recipient goes, I recommend Salon & Spa Suites in Hillsborough. You’ll find several stylists, a massage therapist, an esthetician, a nail pro, and more. They are clean and safe, and a one-stop shop for all things relaxing. I recommend a haircut & style with Leah, or a manicure with Michelle and you’ll be in very good hands. (Also, they both have wine.)

Tea at The Carolina Inn

Having big hair and going to Afternoon Tea at The Carolina Inn are hands-down the most Southern things I do. The Carolina Inn is always a wonderful place to visit, but around the holidays it becomes extra magical. There are several delicious holiday flavored teas to choose from, tasty tea sandwiches, scones and of course – dessert! We opted to add on a glass of prosecco, as one does, and it finally felt like the holidays were here.

I am sensitive about this suggestion because I know there are still hesitations about going out to eat, or other experiential things like this. My best friend and I really enjoyed tea at The Carolina Inn last weekend, and we felt safe the entire time. Everyone is masked and spaced out appropriately. If you aren’t comfortable going out and about yet – we completely understand. Put this on your list (and check it twice) as a way to welcome the holidays next year.

Holiday Cocktail Recipes from Carrie Brogren

“Cranberry Margarita”

  • 2 Ounces Fresh Cranberry Juice
  • 1 Ounce fresh squeezed Lime Juice
  • 1.5 Ounces Silver Tequila
  • .05 Ounce Cointreau
  • .25 ounce Agave Syrup
  • Fresh Cranberries, lime, and Lime Salt (for garnish)

Add a festive twist to a classic margarita. If you’d like, you can use store bought Cranberry juice, but I prefer to make my own because you can customize the sweetness. In addition, I like to make my own Lime Salt for the salt rim because it adds a little flavor, aroma, and color to your cocktail!

For the homemade Cranberry Juice you will need:

  • 4 Cups of Fresh Cranberries
  • 4 Cups of water
  • ½-1 Cup of your choice of sweetener (I prefer about ½ cup of white sugar).

Add cranberries and water to a large pot and bring to a boil. Allow berries to soften and pop (about 10 minutes). Remove from heat and drain through a large mesh strainer into a bowl, smashing the berries with a wooden spoon in an effort to release the juice. Let cool , transfer to a glass jar, and store in the refrigerator.

For the Lime Salt:

  • ½ Cup Sea Salt
  • 1 Tablespoon finely grated Lime Zest

Combine salt and lime zest and spread evenly onto a baking pan. Bake at about 200 degrees for about 30 minutes. Cool completely and store in an airtight container at room temperature.

For the cocktail:

Wet the rim of your cocktail glass and rim it with Lime Salt.

Add a handful of ice and all ingredients to a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously and pour into a glass. I garnished with a couple of fresh cranberries and a slice of dehydrated lime.

Finishing Touches: Gift Wrapping

The holiday season is upon us, and there are few things that I enjoy more than the gift of giving! Amid the chaos of finding the perfect present, the gesture of thoughtful wrapping makes the experience of receiving even more bountiful. I’ve rounded up a few of the easiest ways to make your presents the most delightful treasures for the eye!
