In response to calls from leaders and coaches at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 97.9 The Hill WCHL has launched a program designed to create Name-Image-Likeness opportunities for all UNC-Chapel Hill varsity athletes. The 2021 UNC Football Team will function as the pilot program for this exciting opportunity.
In his first press conference on the subject of NIL in July, UNC Head Football Coach Mack Brown said, “We’ve been looking really, really hard as a group to try to find things that can benefit our entire team, because the Sam Howells of the world are going to make their deals and they’re going make their money. But the backup right guard; what can we do to help him? What can we do to share the money with all of our players? We feel like that is more beneficial to our team.”
The “Carolina Player Spotlight” radio feature gives all 100 football players the opportunity to be featured on 97.9 The Hill WCHL and Chapelboro.com. This segment is designed to bring awareness and familiarity to the whole team, one player at a time.
In partnership with local businesses, the players will tell the community a little bit about themselves, and the feature will be made possible by these businesses. All players will be invited to participate and all who do will be compensated for providing their voices for their Carolina Player Spotlight which will also be available on Chapelboro.com.
“Our aim is to be a media partner for these young athletes,” said Aubrey Williams, General Manager of 97.9 The Hill WCHL. “For many, this will be their first media opportunity and we want to set the tone for a professional experience that they can carry with them into the world, while simultaneously offering a financial benefit.”
UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham shared support of this program by saying, “Thanks to WCHL for creating an NIL program that will provide many opportunities for athletes in this new era. We all want to support our student-athletes and appreciate those businesses that get behind programs like this.”
Throughout the UNC Football season (September-December) 97.9 The Hill WCHL will air 60-second player spotlights during prime time daily programming and UNC Football game broadcasts.
