The CORA Food Pantry in Chatham County has seen a 50 percent increase in pantry participation, according to its estimates, and organizers expect that number to continue rising in coming months. As such, CORA is pushing for a surge of donations in October by calling on any and all “hunger heroes” in the community.

The CORA Hunger Heroes food drive sees CORA partner with local business and community groups to collect food for its pantry that supports families that are facing a loss of income due to COVID-19 along with other uncertainties and difficulties that would exist with or without a global pandemic. According to CORA, the most-needed items include:

  • Canned Salmon
  • Canned Pineapple
  • Maseca
  • Chef Boyardee
  • Canned Green Beans
  • Cereal Bars
  • Olive Oil
  • Canned Peas
  • SPAM

Donations will be collected at local grocery stores and business, and any household or nonperishable food items in boxes, cans or plastic containers are accepted. In Chapel Hill, there is collection bin located at the 97.9 The Hill WCHL studio located in University Place. The full list of participating locations can be found here.

Donations will also be collected at socially distanced, drive-through food drives in Siler City and Pittsboro. CORA will be collecting food on October 17 from 10am – 2pm at Bray Park in Siler City. Also, they will be at Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro on October 18 from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m.

Online donations are also being accepted, and everything contributed to CORA goes directly to support its mission to “provide food to individuals and families within our community who are in need during difficult personal economic periods.”
