Join Aaron Keck every Tuesday afternoon for Chatham County Roundup, a recurring series that shines the spotlight on Chatham County through engaging discussions and interviews with locals, newsmakers, officials and more.

This week, Zach Horner of the Chatham News and Record stopped by to discuss his podcast and an upcoming forum on teen mental health in Chatham County. You can listen to the full conversation below, and tune in next Tuesday for more Chatham County Roundup.

“For people who might’ve missed the first time, the chat cast is a new podcast that the News + Record launched with Our Chatham, which is a project out of the UNC Hussman school of Journalism and Media,” said Horner. “The first season, we called ‘The Age of Anxiety.’ It’s a 10 episode series that focused on teen mental health in Chatham County … One in three Chatham high schoolers say they’ve experienced symptoms of depression, one and nine say they’ve attempted suicide. Really, the series just kind of explored that and just all the different ways that that mental health plays a role in the lives of teenagers — whether it’s good mental health, poor mental health, the different factors from school to social media to politics to tough lives at home.

The series discusses individual experiences, the organizations and institutions that attempt to assist struggling young people as they navigate the troubled waters of mental health during adolescent development, and even approaches the issue from the angle of public policy.

“There is a whole section in, I believe it’s episode eight, that talks about Medicaid expansion — which is obviously a huge political topic in North Carolina right now,” said Horner. “But just practically how that could help people, not just across the state but in Chatham County, get healthcare — particularly for mental health.”
