Carrboro Police took a man into custody last week following a standoff that lasted just over 24 hours. Authorities initially attempted to take the individual into custody on an involuntary mental commitment, but he then ran into his home and barricaded himself in with a handgun, according to law enforcement.

There were no hostages and, ultimately, no injuries were reported throughout the event.

“I think it was a textbook resolution of an incident like that,” said Carrboro Mayor Lydia Lavelle on The Aaron Keck Show last week. “It’s what you would have wanted to see happen.”

Carrboro Police and other law enforcement agencies were in communication with the individual through the duration of the standoff. Police also evacuated homes in the surrounding area and asked residents to stay clear of the area while the situation was ongoing.

Lavelle pointed out that many different organizations helped during the standoff, including the Chapel Hill Police Department, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the UNC-Chapel Hill Police Department, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, the South Orange Rescue Squad, the Carrboro and Chapel Hill Fire Departments, the Orange County EMS and the 9-1-1 Communications Divisions.

Lavelle also addressed the use of an armored vehicle by responders. Carrboro does not have an armored vehicle, the mayor said, and it was brought in by outside organizations for transporting officers into high risk situations.

“Even though our department doesn’t have it, utilizing the mutual aid and kind of thinking through the best way to deal with the situation,” Lavelle said. “It made sense and there could have been multiple civilian or officer injuries if we hadn’t had that kind of extra protection there.”

Lavelle said she also appreciates the response from residents in the area, who got alerts to stay away from their homes while the situation was unfolding.

“Almost everyone in the area helped in some way to invest their resources in this prolonged dangerous situation.”
