Thanks to efforts by the Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department, one of the fire hydrants in Carrboro Town Commons has been painted pink as part of efforts to raise awareness for breast cancer.

With the month of October widely recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, fire stations around the state are using the hashtag #pinkhydrantchallenge to challenge each other to paint a hydrant pink. According to WFMY News in Greensboro, the Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department challenged the Burlington Fire Department as well.
The challenge also encourages residents to take a picture with the pink hydrant and use the hashtag to honor a loved one who has has battled — or is battling — breast cancer. Residents can sign their name on the hydrant, as well.
We had a #BreastCancerWarrior stop by to sign the hydrant as part of the #PinkHydrantChallenge in #Carrboro. #TipOfTheHelmet to this warrior and all warriors that are battling or have battled this dreadful disease. #Respect pic.twitter.com/hjUc35lAqR

In previous years, the Chapel Hill Fire Department has participated in the Pink Heals tour. This national firefighters campaign brings pink fire trucks to towns across the country to raise money for cancer research.
