Welcome to “Paying it Forward,” a monthly interview series made possible by Piedmont Health. In this series, we hear from the folks at Piedmont about the importance of community health centers – and why they chose a career in community health.

In this month’s installment, Aaron is joined by PHS dental director Katrina Mattison-Chalwe – who also runs Piedmont’s mobile health unit, which travels around the region to provide medical and dental services to underserved areas where people often have difficulty finding care. In addition to her work at Piedmont, Dr. Mattison-Chalwe also runs a dental nonprofit called Smiles For Jesus, and she’s taken numerous medical mission trips to Haiti and the Dominican Republic with Mebane’s Crosslink Community Church.

“The amount of gratitude and the tears that you see,” she says, “it overwhelms (the patients), and it overwhelms me. It’s such a gratifying feeling. They bless me much more than I could ever bless them.”
