The UNC women’s tennis is sitting atop the ITA world once again.
The Tar Heels defeated Georgia Monday afternoon in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle to claim their fourth consecutive title and seventh overall, all of which have come in the last 11 years.
UNC defeated Pepperdine, Michigan, Texas A&M and finally Georgia to win the title. Monday’s win is also Carolina’s second against the Bulldogs in the last two weeks, having beaten them in Chapel Hill on February 1. It also improves UNC’s season record to 14-0.
The Tar Heels fought back from an early setback in doubles, as the top-ranked duo of Carson Tanguilig and Fiona Crawley fell 6-4. But wins from the duo of Abbey Forbes and Reilly Tran and a clutch tiebreak win from Reese Brantmeier and Elizabeth Scotty helped Carolina claim the doubles point for the 13th time in 14 tries this season.
In singles, Anika Yarlagadda continued UNC’s positive momentum with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win to give Carolina a 2-0 lead in the match. Tanguilig eked out a tight first set, 7-5, before dominating the second to put the Tar Heels one point away from the win. That point came from Forbes, who like her teammates won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Forbes’ win gave Carolina the ITA title.
UNC is the first program in the history of women’s tennis to win four consecutive ITA indoor national championships. And it could’ve been even more: the Tar Heels have appeared in each of the last nine championship rounds and 10 of the last 11. All seven of the team’s ITA titles have come under head coach Brian Kalbas, with two of them coming against Georgia. The Tar Heels also defeated the Bulldogs in 2015. In fact, Georgia is the last team to beat Carolina in the ITA indoor championship, doing so in 2019. UNC got its sweet revenge Monday.
Up next for the Tar Heels, who will likely ascend to No. 1 in the ITA’s next rankings, is ACC play. Carolina will visit Virginia on February 24 to begin their conference season.
