Reese Brantmeier won the clinching singles match to give No. 8 Carolina a 4-3 road win at No. 1 Georgia on Saturday afternoon in Athens. It was UNC’s last match before competing in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Illinois next week.

Brantmeier contributed in the doubles competition as well, teaming up with freshman Alanis Hamilton for a 6-1 win. Carson Tanguilig and freshman Susanna Maltby won 6-0 in their doubles match, giving Carolina a dominant doubles point win and a 1-0 lead.

In singles, Tanguilig and Thea Rabman each earned straight-sets wins, putting UNC up 3-0 in the match and one point away from victory. Georgia won each of the next three singles matches to finish, but Brantmeier recovered from a second-set loss on the No. 1 singles court to defeat Georgia’s Dasha Vidmanova – the No. 1 women’s singles player in the latest ITA rankings – 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 and clinch the victory for the Tar Heels.

Carolina is 6-1 on the young spring season, its only loss coming at Virginia, 4-3, on January 20. The Tar Heels defeated both Alabama (4-1) and Wisconsin (4-0) in the ITA Kick-Off event at the Chewning Tennis Center in late January to punch their ticket to the National Team Indoor Championship, which will be played from February 7 through February 10 on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.
