Despite Pittsburgh holding 15-9 edge in total shots and a 5-1 edge in shots on goal, Carolina made good on its only opportunity of the night to steal a 1-0 win on the road on Thursday.

Kate Faasse scored the game’s only goal in the 26th minute, capitalizing on a mistake in the Panther defense and calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net. It’s Faasse’s seventh goal of the season (no other Tar Heel has more than four) and her third straight match with a goal.

After that, Carolina relied on its stout defense to see the win through. Keeper Clare Gagne made four of her season-high five saves in the second half, including two in the span of just 48 seconds of game time. When the match ended, Gagne had secured her sixth clean sheet of the season. As a team, the Tar Heels have allowed just one goal in their past six matches.

With the win, UNC improves to 9-1 on the season and 2-0 in ACC play. The Tar Heels are also 3-1 on the road after winning four true road matches last season. Carolina will be back in action when it visits Syracuse on Sunday at noon.
