The UNC women’s soccer team overcame an early deficit Friday against Towson, scoring three unanswered goals to advance into the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 3-1 win.

The Tigers took the lead in the 25th minute and appeared the stronger side at times in the first half, outshooting the Tar Heels 9-8. Nevertheless, Bella Sember found an equalizer shortly before the half, scoring in the 44th minute to draw Carolina even.

The Tar Heels took that momentum into the second half, completely snuffing out Towson’s offensive attack and taking the lead on an Ally Sentnor goal in the 60th minute. Avery Patterson added insurance in the 84th minute with her team-leading eighth goal of the season, but it proved unnecessary: Towson didn’t register a single shot in the second half. Carolina, meanwhile, totaled 13.

The win moves No. 3 seed UNC into the round of 32 in the tournament, where it will face No. 6 seed Alabama next week. Carolina has faced the Crimson Tide – a fellow national semifinalist in 2022 – already this season, tying them 1-1 in Tuscaloosa in September.
