The UNC women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight Saturday afternoon, defeating BYU 3-2 at Dorrance Field.

A pair of second-half goals from freshman forward Maddie Dahlien — her second and third in her last three matches — gave Carolina a 3-1 advantage it wouldn’t relinquish.

The Tar Heels initially took the lead with a goal from Talia Dellaperuta in the 13th minute. It was the second consecutive match with a goal for the junior from Georgia. But Carolina’s lead lasted fewer than six minutes, as the Cougars equalized soon after. The match went into halftime even at 1-1 before Dahlien’s goals in the 58th and 65th minutes. BYU drew within a goal in the 69th minute and sent two more shots on goal in the home stretch, but could not find a way through Carolina goalie Emmie Allen. Allen’s four saves on the night tied a career-high for the redshirt freshman.

UNC fired 19 shots against BYU, the most in three NCAA Tournament matches. Redshirt freshman Ally Sentnor, who scored twice in the team’s second-round win against Georgia, led the team with five shots. Avery Patterson, the team’s leading scorer on the season, didn’t find the back of the net on three shots but did record an assist on all three goals. That’s a career-high for the junior from Florida.

No. 2 seed UNC is the first team into the tournament’s Elite Eight, and will now await the winner of No. 1 seed Notre Dame and No. 5 seed TCU in the next round. Should the Horned Frogs advance, UNC would host the next match at Dorrance Field. They would visit South Bend should the Irish advance. It would be UNC’s first meeting this season with both opponents. Both matches would be played on Friday.
