The Tar Heels will be a No. 3 seed in the 2023 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament. The full bracket was announced on Monday afternoon.
Carolina will face Towson in the first round of the tournament at Dorrance Field, at a date and time to be announced later. The winner of that match will face the winner of No. 6 seed Alabama and Western Carolina in the second round, which would also be in Chapel Hill should the Tar Heels advance. UNC tied with the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa earlier this season.
Other teams in UNC’s region include No. 1 seed BYU, No. 2 seed Texas Tech and No. 4 seed Harvard. Should Carolina advance to the round of 16 and face Texas Tech, that match would be played on the road in Lubbock. NCAA Tournament matches are played on the campus of the higher-seeded team until the College Cup. WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary will host the national semifinals and championship once again this year.
The Tar Heels are one of four ACC teams included in the field, along with No. 3 seed Notre Dame, No. 1 seed Clemson and overall No. 1 seed Florida State. Defending national champions UCLA are the fourth No. 1 seed. For a full look at the tournament bracket, click here.
UNC is aiming to win the program’s 23rd national championship after a runner-up finish in 2022. The team hasn’t won a title since 2012, by far the longest such drought in program history. In that span, the Tar Heels have reached five College Cups and three national title matches. This season, UNC enters the tournament with a 10-1-8 record, though the team has won just one of its past six matches.
