The UNC women’s soccer team won its second consecutive ACC match at home Sunday afternoon against NC State, topping the Wolfpack 2-0. The win not only moved UNC to 11-3 overall and 4-2 in ACC play, but it was also the program’s 400th all-time win at home.

The Tar Heels’ all-time record at home, which goes back to 1979, is 400-32-18. In those 450 matches, Carolina has a scoring differential of 1,714-232 (that’s plus-1,482 for those at home). All 450 matches have come under the direction of head coach Anson Dorrance.

Carolina scored both of its goals in a span of 3:08, separated by the halftime break. Sophomore forward Emily Murphy scored from point-blank range in the 43rd minute after a UNC corner kick ping-ponged around in NC State’s six-yard box. When the ball fell to Murphy near the goal line, she stuck out her foot for what is likely the shortest goal she’s ever scored.

Junior Avery Patterson joined in the fun just 37 seconds into the second half, firing in a shot from outside the 16-yard box that found its way into the back of the net. It’s Patterson’s eighth goal this season, which is by far the most on the team.

The Tar Heels easily could have scored in several other instances, getting off a season-high 29 shots against the Wolfpack, 12 of which were on goal. NC State only managed three shots, and was denied on both of its shots on goal by UNC goalkeeper Emmie Allen.

Though Carolina still has four more matches to go in the regular season, the team will celebrate an early Senior Night against Wake Forest on Friday, October 14. After that match, UNC will finish the regular season with three consecutive road matches. The first is a potential postseason preview, as Carolina will travel to defending national champions Florida State on October 20.
