The UNC women’s lacrosse team picked up a 13-9 home win against Virginia Tech on Senior Day Saturday afternoon, while the men’s team was trounced, 14-6, in a visit to No. 2 Virginia.

The women’s game against the Hokies remained close throughout, with the Tar Heels never truly putting the game on ice until the final two minutes. Virginia Tech led 4-3 midway through the second quarter, but three unanswered Carolina goals gave the Tar Heels the advantage back. Though the Hokies tied the game at 7-7 in the third quarter, UNC wouldn’t trail again.

The score stood at 11-9 with 3:15 remaining in the fourth, but two Alyssa Long goals in a span of 39 seconds secured the victory. Long dominated offensively, scoring six goals and adding an assist for good measure. No other Tar Heel scored more than twice.

The win improves Carolina to 8-5 on the year and 4-3 in conference play. The Tar Heels will play two straight road games to end the season, with the first coming at Pittsburgh on Saturday, April 13 at noon.

On the men’s side, the No. 2 Cavaliers jumped all over the Tar Heels early, leading 6-1 after the first quarter and 10-4 at halftime. Carolina only scored twice in the second half as the deficit increased to as large as nine goals. Logan McGovern scored a hat trick, but that was about all the good news to be had for the Tar Heels.

The team is now 6-5 overall, having lost three consecutive games. Up next is a home matchup with No. 4 Syracuse on April 13 at 1 p.m.
