A game-winning goal in overtime from Eva Ingrilli gave the UNC women’s lacrosse team a thrilling 10-9 win at No. 15 Virginia on Friday in the ACC opener.

The game was tightly contested throughout the evening, as Carolina never led by more than three goals. The Tar Heels held a 5-2 advantage midway through the second quarter, but Virginia closed strong and scored with four seconds remaining the period to cut the deficit to 6-5 at halftime.

The Cavaliers tied the game at 7-7 late in the third, but two goals from Olivia Dirks to open up the fourth quarter gave Carolina the lead back. Virginia then answered with two goals of its own, with the equalizer coming with just 26 seconds left in regulation.

Despite the Cavaliers gaining momentum entering sudden-victory overtime, it only took Ingrilli 92 seconds to secure a Carolina victory.

The goal gave Ingrilli a hat trick on the night. The freshman attacker has hat tricks in three of her four games this season and leads Carolina with 11 goals. Caitlyn Wurzburger isn’t far behind with 10, two of which came against Virginia. Ashley Humphrey and Dirks each added two.

The win is Carolina’s second against a ranked team this season and moves the Tar Heels to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in ACC play. The Tar Heels will be back in action on Sunday when they host High Point at Dorrance Field at 1 p.m.
