Six unanswered goals to start the game provided quite the start for the No. 1 UNC women’s lacrosse team in its ACC opener at Virginia Tech Friday night. The Tar Heels held that lead for the rest of the game in the 10-6 victory and moved to 4-0 on the young season.

Virginia Tech transfer Sophie Student got the scoring started against her former team, scoring unassisted less than three minutes into the game. Goals from Nicole Humphrey, Brooklyn Neumen, Olivia Dirks and freshman sensation Marissa White followed in the first half, giving Carolina its 6-0 advantage. White is tied with Caitlyn Wurzburger for the team lead with 10 goals this season.

Wurzburger found the back of the net often against the Hokies, completing a hat trick less than 15 minutes of game time across the second and third quarters. Wurzburger also dished out three assists, giving her a game-high six points. Reilly Casey led the team in assists with four on the night and holds the season lead with 11.

The win was Carolina’s 23rd consecutive regular-season ACC victory, a streak which extends all the way back to March of 2019. But that streak will be challenged in UNC’s next game, a showdown with No. 4 Boston College in the teams’ first meeting since the 2022 national championship last summer. This year’s game will be played in Chapel Hill next Friday at 4 p.m., and will also be broadcast on ESPNU.
