The UNC women’s lacrosse team needed six fourth-quarter goals to push past feisty ECU on the road Tuesday afternoon. The Tar Heels entered the quarter tied at 6-6, but used the late rally to secure a 12-9 victory in their first-ever trip to Greenville.

The Pirates put the Tar Heels on the back foot early, scoring the first three goals of the game and threatening to shut Carolina out of the first quarter entirely before senior midfielder Nicole Humphrey scored with four seconds remaining. That sparked a 4-0 UNC run which flipped the scoreboard in the Tar Heels’ favor.

Humphrey had a banner day against the Pirates, scoring a career-high four goals to pace the Carolina offense. Caitlyn Wurzburger scored twice and six other Tar Heels each found the back of the net once. Two of Humphrey’s goals came in the fourth quarter as part of a 6-0 Carolina run, one which flipped an 8-6 deficit to a 12-8 advantage. ECU had scored the first two goals of the quarter as part of another string of three unanswered.

The win snaps a brief two-game losing streak in true road environments for the Tar Heels and improves their record to 11-2 on the season. It also marked the regular-season non-conference finale, as Carolina will close the season with a pair of challenging conference tilts. First up is Senior Day at Dorrance Field against No. 1 Syracuse. The Orange will visit Chapel Hill on Saturday at noon, and the game will be televised nationally on ESPNU. After that is the regular-season finale at Duke on Thursday, April 20.
