UNC scored eight unanswered goals across the first and second quarters on its way to a 19-10 win against Princeton in the NCAA quarterfinals Thursday night at Dorrance Field. Carolina is now Final Four-bound for the third time in the last five seasons and 14th time overall.
The 8-0 run blew open what had been a tight game through most of the opening quarter. The game was tied 1-1 entering the period’s final minute before Eliza Osburn and Marissa White both scored in a 44-second span to give the Tar Heels a 3-1 edge entering the second quarter. UNC then scored the first six goals of that quarter, with the six goals coming from six different players. The Tar Heels led 9-2 at halftime.
Osburn would score twice more in the second half to finish with a hat trick. She was one of six Tar Heels to end the night with multiple goals. Ashley Humphrey scored twice and dished out five assists, giving her an NCAA-record 250 for her career.
UNC’s 51 total shots tied its season high. As a team, Carolina outshot Princeton 51-29 and held a 35-19 edge in shots on goal.
Thursday’s win improves UNC to 20-0 overall this season. The Tar Heels will be back in action when they face No. 4 Florida in the national semifinals in Foxborough, MA Friday.
