Top-ranked UNC had no trouble dispatching ECU on the road Wednesday night in Greenville, thrashing the Pirates 20-4 and keeping its unblemished record intact.
Six different Tar Heels found the back of the net multiple times, with Marissa White (four goals) and Caroline Godine (three) each finishing with hat tricks. Chloe and Ashley Humphrey both scored twice, and Chloe accounted for 11 of UNC’s 44 total shots. As a team, ECU finished with 14 shots.
The Pirates hung tough for much of the first quarter, scoring twice in the span of a minute to cut UNC’s lea to 4-3. The Tar Heels would score two goals of their own in the final 25 seconds of the quarter, which was just the start of an avalanche. Across the second, third and fourth quarters, Carolina would go on to score 11 more unanswered goals for a 13-0 run in total, snuffing out any hopes of a Pirates upset. After ECU finally broke the run, UNC scored three more times in the final six minutes to reach the 20-goal plateau for the fifth time this season.
The 20-4 win matches UNC’s largest margin of victory in more than a month. It’s the ninth time in 13 games this season the Tar Heels have won by double digits and the third time they have won by at least 16 goals.
Wednesday’s game was also UNC’s final non-conference matchup of the regular season. The top-ranked Tar Heels are now 13-0 overall and will return to action when they host Cal at Dorrance Field Sunday at 11 a.m.
