For the first time since 2015, there is a new ACC champion in women’s lacrosse. Carolina fell to Boston College in the conference championship game Sunday in Charlotte, snapping a six-season long tournament winning streak.

The Eagles ended the game on a 5-0 run which erased a 9-6 UNC lead. Carolina entered the fourth quarter leading 9-8, but three Eagle goals in the span of just 1:03 erased that lead and flipped the game on its head. Carolina managed just one shot after that sequence and none in the final 9:25.

The loss also snaps UNC’s four-game winning streak against Boston College which included both the ACC and national championship games in 2022. The Eagles and Tar Heels are no strangers to meeting each other in important matchups, as BC’s last win over UNC came in the 2021 national semifinals.

The loss drops UNC to 14-4 on the season. The team’s four losses this year are its most since 2019. Ironically, that season ended with a loss to Boston College in the Final Four.

Now deprived on an automatic bid, Carolina will wait to see if it earned an at-large selection to this year’s NCAA Tournament. The bracket of 29 teams will be announced on May 7.
