No. 5 Notre Dame suffocated Carolina’s offense all game long at Dorrance Field on Saturday, defeating the Tar Heels 7-5 and dealing UNC its second loss of the season.

The Fighting Irish doubled up the Tar Heels on shots (34-17) and never trailed, though the game stayed close throughout. Notre Dame scored the game’s first three goals, but Carolina rallied to score three unanswered goals in a span of less than five minutes midway through the second quarter. The game went to halftime tied at 3-3.

Notre Dame controlled play in the second half, scoring twice to take a 5-3 lead midway through the third. Caitlyn Wurzburger scored late in the period to cut that lead to 5-4, but the Irish scored two goals in 57 seconds early in the fourth quarter to answer. UNC only scored one more goal in the game’s final 12:12.

No Tar Heel scored more than once, and none totaled more than three shots. It’s by far UNC’s lowest-scoring game of the season. The five goals are the fewest Carolina has scored in a regular season game since March 31, 2014.

UNC is now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Tar Heels will be back in action when they visit Clemson on March 9 at 3 p.m. It will be Carolina’s first ever road game at Clemson.
