Defending national champions Northwestern used a 5-0 run in the first half to take control against the UNC women’s lacrosse team on Monday afternoon at Dorrance Field. The run gave the Wildcats a 7-3 lead they would not relinquish in a 16-10 win.

Carolina briefly led by a 3-2 score midway through the first quarter, but less than two minutes after Kiley Mottice’s go-ahead goal, Northwestern began its run. Carolina scored the first two goals of the second half to trim the deficit to 7-5, but the Wildcats answered with a 7-0 run to blow the game open at 14-5. A 5-0 run by the Tar Heels in the fourth quarter was too little, too late.

Four Tar Heels, including Mottice, each scored twice, but Northwestern outshot Carolina 35-24. The Wildcats’ Izzy Scane dominated on offense, scoring seven goals on eleven shots.

UNC is now 7-4 overall and has dropped two of its last three games. The Tar Heels have lost multiple regular-season home games for the first time since 2017. The team’s next test is another stiff one, as Carolina will travel up north to visit No. 4 Boston College on Saturday at noon. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network.
