The UNC women’s lacrosse team capped off the regular season with a flourish on Thursday afternoon, beating No. 25 Duke 16-11 at Dorrance Field.

Caroline Godine, Darcy Felter and Liv Pikiell all posted hat tricks for Carolina, while Olivia Dirks and Caitlyn Wurzburger added a pair of goals each. Pikiell, a junior defender entered the game with just four goals in her collegiate career.

Godine, Felter, Pikiell and Dirks each found the back of the net in a high-scoring first quarter, one which saw Duke score first but Carolina lead 6-3 at the end of the 15 minutes. The Tar Heels led 7-3 early in the second, but the Blue Devils rallied to trim the advantage to 8-7 by halftime. Wurzburger scored both of her goals in a span of 1:36 in the third quarter, part of a 4-0 UNC run which effectively broke the game open.

Alyssa Long capped the run with a goal at the 11:28 mark of the fourth quarter, giving UNC its largest lead of the day at 15-9.

Carolina nearly doubled up Duke on shots, 35-19, and held a 25-15 advantage in shots on goal. Alecia Nicholas made four saves and played all 60 minutes in the net.

With the victory, UNC ends the regular season on a three-game winning streak and sits at 10-5 overall and 6-3 in conference play. Up next for the Tar Heels is the ACC Tournament, which begins next week. Seedings have yet to be finalized, but Carolina will begin the tournament in the quarterfinals in Charlotte on Wednesday, April 24.
